If the unwed shoe were on the other foot

Last night while watching Roland Martin a very good point came forth, the question asked was this, if the tables were turned and Obama had a 17 year old daughter who was pregnant and unmarried, would it have been as accepted as it was for Sarah Palin? Would the voting public have embraced the Obama family and still applauded Obama as they have Palin?

My simple answer- Hell No

If Obama and wife Michelle had a 17 year old daughter who was pregnant with only a “promise of marriage” it would have been seen as a total disgrace and Obama’s head would have been on the chopping block from the moment his daughter was introduced to America.

Obama has stated that candidate’s family’s are off limits (as they should be) but if the tables were turned the Republicans would have been all over the unwed pregnancy like white on rice. After all, where are his values, how could he have let something like this happen, maybe he should have concentrated on his family more, rather than hitting the campaign trail so hard.

For Sarah Palin who is the self proclaimed “mother of family values and Christian morals” her teen daughter’s pregnancy was small talk compared to if the tables were turned and the Obama family had the same issue. It is definitely a double standard, but that is to be expected in a world of double standards.

This is why I love Roland Martin so much. He addresses issues that others seem unwilling to deal with openly and honestly. I have to say, as a Canadian, I am looking at the whole process from the outside……that said though – I agree that Obama would have been raked over the coals and would NOT be the Democratic nominee.

I am looking forward to Roland this weekend!

  1. I’m not sure – just that, not sure – if it’s fair to say that race has anything to do with how the Obama’s would be treated if one of their daughters was pregnant with a bastard child. Obama made some “thoughtless” comments about how he wouldn’t want his daughters “punished with a baby” due to mistake on their part. He also made statements about the responsibility required – though not currently expected – of Black men who sire – I won’;t say father, sorry – children.

Given his statements he could be forced to endure questions and criticisms that weren’t racially based, but that might well be falsely decried as such. Many of these assaults might well come from Jesse Jackson and other such “Black Leaders.”

Then again, some attacks would probably be just as you describe. Even those though would have to be looked at carefully. America has NO tolerance for idols who “feet of clay” are exposed…
